KPFA is a very popular radio station in Berkeley, California that was first launched in 1949. The most distinguishing factor of this radio station is that it is funded by its listeners. Due to its broadcasting over the San Francisco Bay Area, KPFA also offers talks on public affairs, public news and other talk shows. The frequency over which this radio station broadcasts is 94.1 FM. In fact, it is a talk radio as well as music radio station. There are many things that this radio station focuses on as it is not only restricted to playing music. It has programs which talk about health issues, and even airs radio dramas. The radio station also talks about current affairs regarding politics, economics, social and cultural issues.

In fact, KPFA became the very first radio station that began to specialize in space music. However, the radio station had gotten into trouble quite a few times. One such incident was when KPFA was the first radio station to broadcast a program by a gay politician. KPFA also broadcast Allen Ginsberg’s controversial poem ‘Howl’ during the late 50s along with another broadcast of a group commending the use of cannabis. In another instance, KPFA was accused, saying that it belonged to the Communist Party resulting in many failed challenges into having its license revoked. Apart from this, the radio station is also the first listener-funded radio station, and the first radio station in the Pacific Radio network.

After its inception, KPFA became the very first station supporting radio broadcasting in the US. The fact that non-commercial radio stations were only allowed to serve educational information as part of an extension to colleges and schools, resulted in controversial publicity for KPFA. With the introduction of Anna Turner and Stephen Hill‘s Music, space music become a hit on KPFA.
